Hobbits

Some pictures I did a loooong time ago!

I appear to have misinterpreted the description slightly, and made the soles of their feet hairy instead of the tops 🤦‍♀️. Otoh, I have given them "thick warm brown hair like the stuff on their heads (which is curly)", unlike the film-makers...

I think the one in the black suit was meant to be Bilbo, but then I drew a whole family. Not sure if they're meant to be modern-day hobbits, or it's unintentional anachronism.

And here's one I did much more recently!

Space

I thought I needed to do some art just for the sake of it - not for anything at all.
Came across a photo of a painting I did in school, so I thought I'd see if I could do it better now.😁

I've changed as little as possible, but I have made it a flat plain, because that's how it was meant to be. My teacher got me to add the hills to show distance, but now that I'm grown up I can do it how I want! ('Can' as in allowed to, but also as in am able to.)

It's not easy to do a picture with dark sky during daytime - presumably meaning there is very little atmosphere. I'm really not sure how that would affect the lighting, particularly the aerial perspective.

Done in Clip Studio. I think my settings may have been a bit wrong, because the paint never dried, which was interesting to work with...

Not going to get a job as a concept artist any time soon, but it was fun!

2019 fashion?

I was remembering the children through the ages pictures I drew way back in 1993.
The final one was a prediction of future clothes in the far distant date of 2019.

Thought I would do a quick redraw as a break from work:

I hate drawing legs!
Don't think I got it quite right :-D

Teenage artwork redrawn

Thought I'd redraw one of my children through history. Good to see I've improved in 23 years!

Ye Olde Artwork: Children through the ages

A series of pictures I drew when I was 16. I started in the present and went back a generation each time.

Interesting to see:
  • Interest in historical costume (though I'm now more into ancient history).
  • Drawing children - still do kids' stuff.
  • Attention to detail and historical accuracy - I looked up likely names for the children at each period.
  • Abandonning projects half-finished - yep, still do that...

I got the 1919 clothes out of an old book of my Grandma's

Small boy in a dress :-)

Interesting that in 1845 both little boys and girls wore dresses and trousers, though there are a few minor style differences (minor to us, but probably glaringly obvious to them, just as we can tell a girl's and boy's T-shirt at a glance).

Youngest 1720 child is also a boy!!!

Obviously getting a bit bored by now...

Right pic above and left pic below were from the same period, but Roundheads and Cavaliers respectively.

Another boy in a skirt in right pic.

And then I decided to go back to prehistory! More interesting.

Based on Danish bronze age burial mounds.

Right pic from Spanish cave paintings (reconstruction of clothes from History of Everyday Things by Giovanni Caselli); left pic just how I imagined cave people!

And my imagination of the future! Just need to wait a couple of years now...

I remember someone querying whether they would still wear skirts in the future. My argument was that, since we are not obliged to wear skirts now (i.e. 1993), but people still do, they are just as likely to do so in the future.

Ye olde artwork

Here's another from the archives. Not sure what age, but secondary school, 1st-4th year (age 12-16).

I remember doing this very clearly. I had a flat plain, but the teacher made me add layers of hills to create depth, which was annoying, because now the girl and the dog are not beside the lake. Learning how to show the topography I wanted in a convincing way could have been more useful.

He also wanted me to have something like a vine wrapped round the tree with someone trapped in it, which I refused. Melodramatic was not my aim, but an everyday scene. Worldbuilding, not dramatic events, is still what I like about sci-fi (tho' no objection to a bit of drama too.)

I was particularly pleased with the smoke from the village - it still looks good.

A bit of aerial perspective would have helped.

Ye Olde Artwork

Doing some clearing out and came across a whole load of my old artwork.
This one must be from when I was 10 or 11, because we did Beowulf in Primary 6.

Behold Beowulf (and his friend whose name I've forgotten) fighting the Dragon in a cave:

As always, click to see bigger.

I love the outsize feet! The sundress flame is interesting too.

Expect more...
