I think one difficulty is that once you can cover up "flaws", where do you stop in trying to achieve perfection. It's like a video I watched about a painting that had been over restored. They had probably tried to touch up one blemish here and another there and got carried away to such a level that they had overpainted the whole painting. Fortunately it was possible to clean this off and reveal the original painting underneath, which only had some minor damage.
