Illustrating for another culture

In Pilgrim's Progress there is a guy called Ignorance, who keeps going on about his good heart. So I drew a picture of a heart. You know, standard loveheart, universal symbol.

Only it turns out that 'doesn't fit for Africa'.

Maybe not so universal after all.

I'm curious, what would be relevant for Africa? I've been a few times but I don't recall coming across any local symbol expressing love.

I've no idea. The guy who wrote the book couldn't think of anything, so we're just doing something completely different for that page.
